AP's chief in Malaysia, Vijay Joshi, to oversee coverage in Singapore and Brunei

NEW YORK -- Vijay Joshi, chief of bureau in Kuala Lumpur for The Associated Press, will take on additional leadership duties directing the news coverage of Singapore and Brunei in addition to Malaysia.

AP International Editor John Daniszewski announced Joshi's expanded role on Monday.

Joshi, a veteran foreign correspondent who has covered the war in Iraq, will remain based in Kuala Lumpur.

"Vijay Joshi is one of The AP's most experienced correspondents, and his new duties will bring an integrated approach to coverage of the wealthiest countries in Southeast Asia, which share a common history and overlapping issues," said Asia-Pacific Editor Patrick McDowell.

Joshi joined the AP in New Delhi in 1989 as correspondent. Five years later, he transferred to Singapore as news editor. He served as a correspondent in Cairo from 1997 until he was named news editor for Thailand in Bangkok in 2000. He was appointed chief of bureau in Malaysia on Oct. 1, 2004.

A journalism graduate from the Osmania University in India, Joshi also has a master of science degree in marine geology from Andhra University in India and a bachelor's degree in geology from Osmania.

A native of New Delhi, Joshi began his journalism career with the Indian Express newspaper in 1985. He also worked for India's biggest news agency, Press Trust of India, before joining the AP.
