Charles
Hutzler named bureau chief in Beijing for AP
NEW YORK -- Charles Hutzler, a veteran reporter in China,
has been named chief of bureau in Beijing for The Associated
Press.
The appointment was announced March 31 by Acting International
Editor Laura Myers.
Hutzler joined AP in 1992, working in Trenton, N.J., then
on the International Desk in New York before being sent to
China, where he was correspondent, news editor and then bureau
chief.
In 2001, he was hired to cover China for The Wall Street Journal
and The Asian Wall Street Journal.
Hutzler returned to AP in 2005 to launch a beat focused on
providing in-depth reporting on China's hosting of the 2008
Summer Olympics. He will continue to write on that subject
in his new role as bureau chief.
"Charles brings vast experience and great enthusiasm
to one of the world's most significant stories -- China's
economic expansion and growing diplomatic influence on the
global stage," Myers said. "Under his leadership,
AP will strengthen, broaden and enliven its coverage of the
country as interest grows on the road to the Olympics and
beyond."
Fluent in Mandarin, Hutzler is a graduate of Yale University
and conducted postgraduate research in Singapore as a Fulbright
scholar in 1984-85. He covered China for the Voice of America
in 1987-88 and worked in Philadelphia and New Jersey for United
Press International.
Hutzler is a native of Baltimore.
