Barry Bedlan appointed AP's assistant chief of bureau for Texas

NEW YORK -- Barry Bedlan, news editor for The Associated Press in Georgia since 2003, has been named assistant chief of bureau for Texas, based in Dallas.

The appointment was announced May 31 by Texas Chief of Bureau Dale Leach.

Bedlan succeeds Michelle Williams, who was promoted to bureau chief for Arizona-New Mexico.

Bedlan, a Nebraska native, joined the AP in 1995 in Omaha. He became Nebraska news editor in 1999.

He moved to Atlanta four years later and has overseen coverage of stories including the Atlanta courthouse shootings and Delta Airlines' reorganization under federal bankruptcy protection.

Bedlan graduated from Creighton University and worked at the Omaha World-Herald and the Star-Herald of Scottsbluff, Neb., before joining the AP.
