Michael Warren, Luis Alonso named deputy Latin America editors for The Associated Press

MEXICO CITY -- Michael Warren, news editor for Northern California for The Associated Press, and Luis Alonso, director of AP's Spanish Online service, have been named to the new positions of deputy Latin America editors.

The appointments were announced Sept. 30 by Niko Price, AP's Latin America editor.

The two will help direct AP's new Latin America Desk in Mexico City to coordinate AP's editorial operations across Latin America and the Caribbean. Similar desks in Bangkok and London oversee coverage in Asia, Europe and Africa.

Warren, deputy Latin America editor for English Services, started his news career in AP's Indianapolis bureau in 1988, then became a reporter and supervisor in Miami. He worked on the AP's national editing desk in New York for four years before moving to ABCNews.com, where he helped manage the Web site's launch.

Warren, of Indianapolis, rejoined the AP in 1998 as supervisor in San Francisco, and became news editor for Northern California in 2000.

He is a graduate of Northwestern University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in English and a master's in journalism.

Alonso, deputy Latin America editor for Spanish Services, has supervised AP's first Spanish-language multimedia editorial team since 2001. He previously supervised StarMedia Network's Spanish-language content, as well as worked as a political reporter and as New York and Madrid correspondent for Diario El Nacional in Caracas, Venezuela.

Alonso, of Caracas, holds a bachelor's degree in journalism from the Universidad Central de Venezuela and a master's degree in journalism from the Universidad Complutense in Madrid.
