Vincent Alabiso to direct global business development/photos
for AP
NEW YORK -- The Associated Press announced Friday that Vincent
Alabiso, an AP vice president, has been named director of
global business development/photos. He will oversee the marketing,
sales and promotion of AP's vast collection of current and
historical images.
Alabiso has been AP's executive photo editor since 1990,
during which time AP has won nine Pulitzer Prizes for photography
and been recognized in virtually every major photojournalism
competition.
"Vin brings an unparalleled level of expertise to this
important companywide initiative," said Tom Curley, AP
president and CEO. Alabiso immediately assumes this new role,
in which he will unify and expand global marketing of all
commercial photo activities.
The AP's digital photo archive includes some 800,000 historical
and recent pictures, and its photo library holds an estimated
10 million negatives and prints dating back a century. Commercial
sales of AP images currently include those to magazines, book
publishers, Web sites and personal users.
Under Alabiso's guidance, AP took the industry lead in advancing
digital photography and worked with Kodak to introduce the
first professional digital camera, the NC2000. He created
the Diverse Visions workshop, now in its ninth year, for training
multicultural photojournalists, and helped organize the Associated
Press Photo Managers, a national organization of newspaper
photo leaders. He also has chaired the jury of the Pulitzer
Prize in photography.
Alabiso has served as director of photography for The Boston
Globe and as AP's New England photo editor. He began his career
as a reporter and photographer for The Patriot Ledger in Quincy,
Mass. He has taught at Boston University and holds a journalism
degree from Northeastern University in Boston.
Alabiso's successor to direct AP editorial photo operations
will be named later.
