Former Danville publisher dies


DANVILLE, Ky. (AP) — The former publisher of The Advocate-Messenger in Danville has died at her home following a long illness.

Mary Schurz was 71.

The Advocate-Messenger reports Schurz served as publisher of the daily newspaper from 1978 until 2006. She also served for many years on the board of directors of The Associated Press, the Southern Newspaper Publishers Association and was a past president of the Kentucky Press Association.

In 1985, Schurz was one of 65 editors selected to be a nominating juror for the Pulitzer Prize.

Schurz also served as vice president of Schurz Communications Inc. of South Bend, Ind., a company founded by her father that operates several daily newspapers, radio stations and TV stations around the country.
